Personal Consultation with Dr. Schwartz

Dr. Schwartz accepts new patients for evaluation and treatment stabilization only.   If the patient is found to have ADD, once the best dose of the right medication is worked out (generally in three or four sessions in about two to three months), responsibility for managing the patient's long term care is transferred to the patient's primary care physician or a psychiatrist.  Dr. Schwartz is not currently accepting patients for long-term treatment.

At the first session, Dr. Schwartz meets with the patient alone or with a relative or friend.  If Dr. Schwartz determines that the patient has ADD and there are no contra-indications to medication treatment, he usually suggests an appropriate medication and dose for the patient. Sometimes, he also suggests coaching or other approaches.

He will then see the patient about two weeks after medication is started for a 25 minute session, then two weeks later for a 15 or 25 minute session.  There may be brief phone sessions between office visits.    Medication treatment is usually stabilized by two or three months.  Once it is, he will meet with the patient a few months later to deal with any unanticipated issues that might come up.  If all is well, will assist the patient in establishing an ongoing treatment management relationship with another physician of the patient's choice.  Although this plan is usually helpful and effective, Dr. Schwartz can offer no assurance that he will find the right medication or treatment for any individual patient.

The fee for the initial 50 minute consultation is $400.  Sessions thereafter cost between $120 (15 minutes), $180 (25 minutes) and $270 (50 minutes).   The total cost of evaluation, treatment and referral is usually less than $800, and rarely over $1,000.

Dr. Schwartz is not in any managed care networks.  However, many patients have "out-of-network" benefits that may reimburse them for part of their payments.  Patients pay in full at the beginning of each session.

If you live far from New Haven and can not make an appointment to see Dr. Schwartz in person but would like to ask him questions about the diagnosis and/or treatment of ADD by phone, please call to get information about arrangements for a phone consultation.    Phone consultations generally last 25 to 30 minutes and cost $220.  During your consultation, Dr. Schwartz will speak with you about ADD issues that concern you and help you decide how you can get evaluated and treatment in your local area. If you are already being treated for ADD, after the phone consultation, Dr. Schwartz can, with your permission, send your doctor a report of his impressions and recommendations.

Dr Schwartz will not make a medical diagnosis, prescribe treatment, or assume medical responsibility for a person unless he sees the individual face-to-face, takes a full medical and psychological history, and explicitly agrees to treat the person.  He cannot do this by phone.
